Biography

A native of Fishguard in Pembrokeshire, Joy’s interest in music began at an early age. After receiving an entrance scholarship in 2004, she entered the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she has recently completed her B.Mus. (Hons) degree and graduated with First Class Honours. During her time at College, Joy was awarded the Mabel Linwood Christopher Award, the Lyn Davies vocal studies prize and the Aneurin Davies Memorial Award.

A performer with the Welsh National Youth Opera, Joy has also taken numerous operatic roles at college – Rowan in Britten’s The Little Sweep, Oasis in Chabrier’s L’Étoile, Phyllis in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe and Irma in Charpentier’s Louise. Other College Performances include: Villa Lobos ‘Bachianas Brasileiras No.5’ in Oystermouth Church; Madly Musical; as well as regularly taking part in masterclasses with James Gilchrist, Paul Esswood, Julie Kennard, Roger Nicholls and Colette McGahon.

From an early age Joy has competed in and won many County, Urdd and National Eisteddfodau both in solo, folk solo and duet classes. Her most prestigious award being that she won the Violet Mary Roberts Scholarship at the 2006 and 2007 National Eisteddfod for the best soprano aged 19-25 years, also achieving runner-up in the Blue Ribband Competition. In 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2011 Joy won the ‘Cwpan Ardudwy’ at the Young Farmers National Eisteddfod for the best musical item.

Now a regular soloist in recitals and concerts around the United Kingdom, Spain, Ischia,  Germany and Ireland. Joy has performed alongside the Morriston Orpheus, Dunvant, Llanelli, Morriston RFC, Haverfordwest and Pembroke Male Voice Choirs, Latvia Radio Choir, Fishguard Choir as well as the Ammanford Choral Society. Since being accepted onto the Live Music Now scheme, Joy is now busy bringing music into the community. In November 2006, Joy made her debut performance as a Harpist and Soloist at the Wales Millennium Centre as part of the Wales Young Farmers Federation 60th Gala Concert. During the October 2009 and 2010, Joy travelled to Vancouver to perform for the Vancouver Welsh Society.

Joy has been a faithful member of the Côr Newyddion Da performing at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Cardiff International Arena as well as many parts of Europe.

Joy has appeared on television on numerous occasions including being a soloist on the S4C programmes Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol, Noson Lawen and Wedi 3. Joy also made her television acting debut on Christmas Day 2008 as ‘Ceri’ in the welsh soap Rownd a Rownd.   With her sister Georgina, she has released a CD entitled Cytgord Cariadus (Loving Harmony). In her leisure time, Joy enjoys the YFC movement, acting, and sport and has gained Grade 8 in the harp and piano as well as an ABRSM Dip in Harp teaching.

Joy continues her studies with Gail Pearson and looks forward to pursuing a career in music.
